I'm looking for a nice fairly quiet place, with a good beach and reasonbly priced hotels or bungalows if they exist here. Any ideas ? A friend went to Hainan but didn't like it much.
Not far from here is Songlanshan, anyone been there ?

Shonglanshan is pretty nice...and the hotels around there look to be good. I have only been to the beach though, can't give you much info on the hotels.. The beach isnt that big, there are actually 2 bays, but the water is safe and reasonably clean. There are also many paddle boats etc you can go on to have some fun. Another great beach, about 30 mins south of Xiangshan is the resort in Shirpu...the town itself is a bit smelly and not much happening (although its a great little fishing village)..the resort area is fantastic. There is a mini amusement park, with a few rides, big ferris wheel near the water etc. The beach is quite big and I think it's nicer than Songlanshan (I am Aussie, therefore a beach freak)... The hotels I have heard are quite dear right on the beach, but you can stay in town which is only a 10 minute taxi to the beach, will be much cheaper. I think if quiet is what you are after, Shonglashan would be your best bet, but if you want a nicer beach with heaps to do, Shirpu. Look forward to hearing how you liked it/them Nuzy

I've stayed at the Gold Coast Hotel a few times. I wouldn't really recommend it - it's a small beach with tacky lights up in the hills. The hotel is expensive and they expect you to bring money to the beach to pay for all the little attractions, such as jet skis and washing the sand off of your feet. There are no waves to bodysurf on. There is a motorboat that spins around in the tiny swimming area.

I taxi'd or bus'd my way around. I went with locals to each place so I was quite lucky. I dont think it would be a problem going on a scooter, although some parts of the roads to Songlashan can be windy and narrow, so be careful If you really have a sensitive sense of smell, Shirpu isnt for you...but i survived!

So the consensus seems to be stay it Songlanshan, but not at the Gold coast, and visit Shirpu (on the scooter) for some 'action'. Maybe come back via Qiantong and the East Zhejiang Gorge, could be a fun week.

This is probably too late to help your trip Robert, but I need to warn everyone about the beach on zhoushan. last week i went to some really "famous" beach on zhoushan. It was really awful. I didn't expect the water to be blue, so i wasn't disappointed by the murky brown tide. but i expected a lot more from the facilities and upkeep of this most famous of beaches. I could explain in detail, but i'll just say "don't go". It's not nice, no place to lay out. the only advantage this beach has over some is that it is near enough to ningbo to go there in the morning, decide you don't like it, and return to your comfortable room by bedtime.

No I haven't been yet, and I'm planning on Songlanshan when I get a scooter (with an extra battery). The photo of Songlanshan in Tian-yi tourist office looks great, blue sea, white beach, no people, sunny sky - surely it'll be just like that :-)

hey, go to shanghai south bus station which is just by the south railway station. and before going, check out the bus schedule in case you might have to be stuck there for over one hour.

specifics on hotels anyone.... are all of them, but the gold coast one good? I plan on going to Xiangshan area, songlanshan possibly, they are all close, over the may holiday.... will it be hellishly mad like everywhere else or is it still too early (hopefully) for beaches in China? What's the best way from Ningbo to Xiangshan/Songlanshan? How was your trip Robert?
I'm looking for maybe 3 days of taking it easy, is Songlanshan the right place for that?
Cheers all
