When I went (it was last year) I went to Guangzhou and from Guangzhou they have daily flights with Vietnam airlines. But I would recommend you to fly from Shanghai.

Getting the visa is a pain so I gave up on that idea last year. Make sure you leave time to get it.

To get a visa was not at all a problem I left my passport and the application form at the Vietnamese consulate in Guangzhou and I got my visa stamped on the same day afternoon. (it was one year ago) Vietnam is safe to travel in general and I love being there. you can really feel the culture of the people everywhere in everything you do and see. It will change as Vietnam is booming so fast and it is called as the second china.

Hi Suzy, Do you think it is safe to travel in a place where people are so rich? Is it safe to travel in New York? Especially in night. I think Vietnam is safe to travel in comparison with many other places but of course you need to take care of yourself or take some pre cautions while u travel especially if u are in that place for the first time. That is not only in Vietnam any where you are.

My first try of Vietnamese beef noodles was in Sydney! ;D
I wonder they have it in Ningbo.
It was absolutely delicious!
So Vietnam is one of my targets to travel!!

I spent two months there about ten years ago, went slowly from the Mekong Delta to the hill tribes on the Chinese border by train. One of the best journeys I've made. Loved the place, always intended to go back some time and fill in the gaps. The only thing that was a pain was the persistent attempts to overcharge; i'm no novice to that but in Vietnam it was excessive and everyone and literally their grandmother did it. The food was outanding, not only the Vietnamese food but because of the French influence the bread and coffee were the best I've tasted in Asia.
Bon Voyage!

I had been to Ho Chi Minh 2 years ago. It's a laid back and charming city, with traces of French influences. I belong to the Asean countries, so I didn't need any visa to visit Vietnam.
Just a side note, Guangdong is perhaps the richest province in China, but many Chinese won't rate it safer than many other provinces. Food for thought ;-)
