Hi I've been in China while now but never yet been to Ningbo. I have been approached by a company that want me to relocate from my present location (Beijing) to Ningbo (Beilun). What can you guys tell me about Beilun and/or Ningbo? Are there any other expats living in Beilun or does every one commute from Ningbo - I think in one of the threads somebody said about 30 minutes drive?? Assuming that we (self and wife) do have to live in Beilun what are the prices like for rented accommodation? How dog friendly is the area? Our dog is over tall for Beijing (more than 35cms) so we have to live in the suburbs. Is Beilun/Ningbo a dog friendly place? Assuming that I am at work for most of the day are there things for my wife to do in Beilun / Ningbo? Is Ningbo/Beilun also one of these places with terrible traffic congestion problems? 3Q in advance and if you need any Beijing help come and visit this site www.beijingcommunity.com I am very active there, using the same login name.

hi manlin, welcome to Beilun. i am not an expat, but a chinese working in Beilun. some expats commute between Ningbo and Beilun, some just live in Beilun. most of my foreign friends live in beilun, which is about 30-50 minutes drive from Ningbo, depending on where in beilun u r working and where in Ningbo u live. one good thing to live beilun is low rent, but u will find yourself having difficulties in buying real foreign things, like real french food, or to find a nice club.
as for traffic, only minor congestion in Ningbo, and almost no in Beilun coz the district is quite new with less traffic.
no ideas how friendly loca people r to dogs, but one thing is for sure Beilun is kinda suburb with less restrict laws, including laws concerning scooters, motorbikes, and dogs, i suppose.
for any help, pls feel free to contact me at harvest09@163.com

Hi Manlin,
I cannot give you any answer or support regarding Beilun. I have been to Beilun a few times but don't know much about the place. Regarding the dog you can keep your dog in any where in Ningbo as i guess you need to pay 800 RMB every year if you are living in the downtown area if you are in Beilun then i guess you only need to pay 60 RMB per year. (If the law has not changed) I had a friend in ningbo who had a big dog. But now he is not living here any more. So I would recommed you to double check. (as you never know when they change the rules and regulations)

Now, I think it's only 600rmb to register your dog the first year inside Ningbo city, 300rmb every following year, at least that's what we've paid over the past two years.
I have a friend in Beilun who has a full grown Great Pyrennes which is quite large.

Hi. My husband works in Beilun and we preferred to live in Ningbo: there are more places for day and night life. He drives to beilun every day, 30-40 minutes (by hightway: 15 rmb one way). the normal road is too crowdy and dangerous. Before he used to go by bus: one hour and crazy adventures + taxi from the bus station to home. I went to Beilun many times: there are 5 bars of the same owner, nice people going there, but... it is always the same thing. Your wife can meet many other expats in beilun and in Ningbo, so this in my personal opinion is not an issue. For shopping it is maybe easier Ningbo: carrefour, auchan, metro, wall art and small shops for cloths, painting, music, or pgym or cinema in english (at wanda). I mean: hobbies and spare time. Different options also for chinese learning. But if you have children and if you want them go to International School in beilun (AIAN), the shuttle bus goes by the normal way, that is around 40 minutes if you live close by the normal way. There are other international schools in Ningbo (check the site).
