Hey there from Minnesota!! I just landed a job that has me moving to Ningbo in about 3 weeks. I'm selling off all of my belongings and packing up...the problem is: I have no idea what to expect. I've lived in countries other than the US, but mainly Central America and the UK. In fact I have never been to China, not to mention Ningbo. I have a contact looking for apartments for me and I'm starting Chinese lessons this week (yeah, right now I don't know a word of Chinese either). To be honest, I'm scared about this move. Is there a certain area I should look to live? I need to be located fairly close to the airport and the company I'll be employed at has mentioned living by the bay...? Is there a place that I could take language classes? If you have any helpful hints for me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.
Jody

Hi Jody, Wow, Near the Airport and the Bay... that makes no sense... See, Ningbo city has no bay, unless the company is in Belun District. The Airport is fairly close to Ningbo center, 25-30 minutes by taxi, unless you want to live really close to the airport... which I would not recommend because there is just nothing there. Ask your company where exactly in Ningbo are they, how close from the airport you need to be and of course your budget. I would think you should go for some place in the Haishu District, like near the train station maybe, as it is still the center of Ningbo and the closest to the Airport. Yes, there are places to take Chinese classes, I personally don't know them as I have a tutor that comes to my home to teach me, but you can find them easily, I believe Craig has posted that somewhere in this site. And don't be scared! Its not quite the jungle pictured in some documentaries ;D.

Hi, Jody. I was assigned to Ningbo in the same way. I had no idea where I was going or what was there. It's the original reason that I created Ningbo Guide.
What's your business? Your employer is most likely in Beilun, which is a town about 30 minutes by car outside of metropolitan Ningbo. The airport is about 15-20 minutes away from the city center. You can either live in Beilun and go to the airport as needed, or live in Ningbo and commute to work every day.
If you need any assistance locating a tutor, apartment, car and driver, etc, please let me know by email. I will be happy to help you.

I guess I wasn't very specific when I posted. The company I will be working for is based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota...a subarb of Minneapolis. I will be the only person from the company to be located in China. I just need to be able to access the airport fairly easily since I will be doing a fair amount of traveling while living there. However, it sounds like a 30 minute cab ride is all it takes. Other than that where I live is entirely up to me.
I also wanted to mention that I've googled "Ningbo" numerous times and have found just about nothing related to moving there. Thank you so much for your time and effort on the website..as it has been a HUGE help!

Hello everyone, especially Jody and Craig (who I'm REALLY hoping will be a massive help to me as, like Jody, I'm finding NO INFO on moving to Ningbo.............and I'm secretly scared too!! Poor me!) Anyway, introductions............My name is Lisa, I am 35 years old. My husband Paul is thinking of taking a job in Ningbo. He has been to Beijing on business for a week, but this is the only experience either of us has of China!! So I feel the need to find out as much as possible before we make any plans. We have 2 children who are 12 and 16 (so education is a priority). We also have 2 dogs. I can't find anything out about housing. Is it mainly apartments? I'm not sure I could live without a garden.....if possible! I know that's fussy, but there's no point being unhappy eh? Does anyone know of any good sites where I can find good photographs of Ningbo and mainly housing areas? Also, what's the situation with health? Is it 'pay as you go'? Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me. Of course if the job is suitable we'll come for a short hol, but it's good to get as much info as possible. Lisa

Hello, newbies, esp for u foreign friends. I'm a ningbonese, acctually, ningbo is a very easy & safe city for u to live. Eating ---- If u like Chinese food, just take a taxi, and most drivers know where to go; If u prefer ur own food, it will be a little bit difficult, as there is hardly traditional and real foreign food in Ningbo city(just my own opinion), but we have supermarket like Metro, Auchan & Carrefour, so i think u can probably buy what u need from those places. Living --- It depends on what kind of places u like. With convenient traffic, yes, Haishu District is a good choice for u. If u have someone pick u up for work/daily life, and u need a quiet place, so can search some suburb villas, like places in Yinzhou District, Fenghua Tengtou village and etc. Shopping --- Ningbo is not a good place for shopping. So if u r not so picky in garments&eating&entertainments, shopping is easy for u, bargaining is available in most of the places, esp if u r kind&nice guy. Anyway, life in Ningbo will be some boring. If just for work is ok. Any newbies need any helps of life in ningbo, i would love to do this favor.

My goodness, a veritable flood of newbies, welcome to you all. This Ningbo guide is the best advice going and Craig and Esteban are great sources of information. I have tried to supplement Craigs information on the Synotrip website (www.synotrip.com and just click on Ningbo). I have been a bit slack lately as i have been tied up with work but more time now.
If I can help in any way just drop me a line.
cheers

Hello, I maybe moving to Ningbo too, and a little depressed. Could anyone comment on whether a service apartment such as the Portman Apartment or a Villa be better for a non-Chinese? Do most of the expacts work in Ningbo live in Ningbo or they commute from Shanghai? I met a few folks on the plane once and they told me they commute from Shanghai to Ningbo.
Thanks

No need to be depressed! i personally don't know the Portman Apartments, I only know that they are quite expensive. If it's you company that pays, maybe not a bad idea if you are single, so you can get all the service and the location is good. I live in a villa, like many other foreigners I know. and no, i don't know anyone that makes daily trips from shanghai to Ningbo, I find it hard to believe.
